Diminish Inflammation Through Smart Smoothie Making
(AAI Smoothie Healing and Optimizing)
Diminish inflammation using food as medicine. There are foods strong enough to reduce inflammation better than some prescription drugs. This is very important information to understand. See, a very impacting fact that most people don’t commonly know about is the following: at the root of every single disease, is inflammation. Heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, cancer, even AD-HD; all of these maladies can be linked to inflammation. It’s also thought to be the culprit behind the visible signs of aging. If we can diminish inflammation in the body it will help us to look and feel younger and, more importantly, keep the chronic disease at bay.
Click here to read the initial portion of this immune boosting smoothie series where we discuss the immune system as a whole and its many components and possible issues.
Inflammation is part of our natural immune response. When the body is harmed, it sends lymph and white blood cells through the lymphatic system to flood the area of concern. This fluid uses chemical reactions to separate and remove harmful substances, restoring the cells back to their normal state.
While brief periods of inflammation, known as acute inflammation, work to heal the body, that extends for long periods of time (chronic inflammation) puts a strain on the circulatory and immune system, damages body tissues and destroys cells. Chronic inflammation can be attributed to a diet high in processed foods and/or to food sensitivities and allergies. Chronic inflammation makes the body more prone to contracting other illnesses and may even cause autoimmune disease: health problems that occur when the immune system attacks healthy tissue in the body.
Autoimmune diseases include:
- Celiac (Gluten) Disease
- Cirrhosis of the Liver
- Crohn’s Disease
- Type I Diabetes
Eating properly can drastically reduce and reverse chronic inflammation while eating processed foods will do the opposite and cause its development. If you truly want to diminish in your body, the very first step is to stop eating fast food. Period.
Best Nutriment to Help Diminish Inflammation
These foods contain high levels of flavonoids: compounds known to reduce inflammation. They also contain high antioxidant levels.
All contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to disrupt the cell signals that trigger inflammation; a great foundation to implement in our search to diminish inflammation.
Both fruits belong to the bromeliad family, and as such, contain the enzyme bromelain, which has been shown to reduce inflammatory responses.
Renowned for its inflammatory properties, this spice contains curcumin: a compound known to interfere with chemicals that cause inflammation. It is helpful both when ingested and when applied topically to skin conditions or injuries.
TIP: Turmeric is not bioavailable when you consume it fresh and raw. Sadly a lot of people don’t know this and they end up using it in their smoothies for no purpose other than to add a pungent flavor to their beverage with zero nutritional benefits. To fix this, you have to spice things up! Just add ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper to your smoothie (you won’t taste such a small amount). Just that little bit is sufficient to create a process in the liver that occupies and slows it down enough to allow the turmeric (curcumin) to be absorbed by the body. This is probably our strongest, the natural contender in our quest to diminish inflammation.

However, before we get into any further nutritional aspects of guarding against inflammation, we want to point out another interesting and very strong anti-inflammatory component that is so unbelievably misunderstood and misappropriated. Testosterone. In the current edition of the scientific journal FASEB Journal, there is a report on a recent study on low testosterone, which proved that testosterone therapy contributed significantly to the suppression of inflammation. Men are usually more muscular than women. They have deeper voices and more body hair and – men are less susceptible to inflammatory diseases and allergies than women. “It is mostly women who are affected by diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or asthma [all of which stem from persistent inflammation]”, Professor Dr. Oliver Werz from the Jena University explains. This is specifically due to the male sex hormones.
