What is the role of testosterone?

The Role of Testosterone, Testosterone therapy is the most important sex hormone that men have. It is responsible for the typical male characteristics and helps maintain sex drive, sperm production, pubic and body hair, muscle, and bone. The brain controls the production of testosterone by the testes.

Low testosterone (also called hypogonadism) can cause: 

• A drop in sex drive
• Poor erections
• Low sperm count
• Increased breast tissue

Over time, low testosterone may cause a man to lose body hair, muscle bulk and strength, accumulate body fat, and have weaker bones (osteoporosis), mood changes, less energy and smaller testes.

What causes low testosterone?

Low testosterone can be caused by injury (trauma, castration, radiation or chemotherapy), testicular infection, hormonal disorders (e.g., pituitary tumors or diseases, high levels of prolactin), or other systematic diseases (such as HIV/AIDS, chronic liver and kidney disease, too much body fat, Type 2 Diabetes and associated Diabetes). Some medications and several genetic conditions (Klinefelter syndrome, hemochromatosis, Kallmann syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome) also can cause low testosterone. Many older men have low testosterone levels and often, the cause is not known.

How is low testosterone diagnosed?

During a physical exam, your doctor will examine body hair, breast size, size and consistency of the testes, scrotum, penis size, and ability to see in all directions. Your doctor will also use blood tests to see if the total testosterone level is within the normal range. This is generally 300 to 1,000 ng/dL but this may differ depending on the laboratory. To diagnose low testosterone you may need more than one early-morning (7 – 10 a.m.) blood test and, sometimes, other tests of the pituitary gland.

How is low testosterone treated?

 Testosterone replacement therapy can improve sexual interest, erectile function, mood and energy, body hair growth, bone density, and muscle mass. There are several methods of testosterone replacement:

Injections
Patches
Gel

The best method will depend on the cause of the problem, the patient’s preference and tolerance, and cost. There are risks with long-term use of any testosterone delivery method for men over 50.

Possible Risks of Testosterone Treatment:

1) A high red blood cell count
2) Occasional stopping of breathing during sleep (sleep apnea)
3) An increase in prostate enlargement or prostate cancer growth
4) Fluid build-up (rarely)
5) Breast enlargement
6) Acne

African American men and men over 40 years of age who have close relatives with prostate cancer and all men over 50 years of age should be carefully monitored for prostate cancer during testosterone treatment. Men with breast cancer or known or suspected prostate cancer should not receive testosterone therapy.

Understanding Your Testosterone

Understanding Your Testosterone or Hormone levels decline as a part of normal aging, and are the cause of several physiological changes. Low testosterone levels in men are associated with a variety of symptoms including reduced motivation, erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, fatigue, increased cholesterol levels, memory loss, reduced muscle mass, and thyroid dysfunction. Because these symptoms are common, physicians will often include hormone levels as part of routine blood work. The Different Types of Testosterone

Understanding Your Testosterone, because there are two main types of testosterone circulating in the body: free testosterone, testosterone bound to albumin, and testosterone bound to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Approximately 60–70% of circulating testosterone is tightly bound to SHBG and so is “inactive” because it cannot bind to its cellular receptor to elicit physiological effects. The most physiologically relevant form of testosterone is “bioavailable.” Both free testosterone (free T) and albumin-bound testosterone are considered bioavailable, which means that they are free to activate the androgen receptor and elicit biological effects. Free T and albumin-bound testosterone account for ~2% and 30–40% of the total amount of circulating testosterone, respectively [1].

A testosterone test measures the levels of total and free testosterone; the “free” test includes both true free and albumin-bound testosterone. The results can then be used to determine if hormone replacement therapy is required. Tests are usually performed in the morning because testosterone levels are the highest first thing between 7 AM and 9 AM. The reference ranges used by Quest Diagnostics, a company that performs these assays for many physicians and hospitals, in men are as follows:

If your results fall within these ranges they are considered “normal” and any symptoms are likely to be attributable to another condition or hormone. However, reference ranges are only guidelines, and so what is considered normal for one person could be high or low in other people.

What do Low Testosterone Levels Mean?

If your testosterone assay results are low, you do not need to worry. It could be a result of normal aging, due to a medication you are taking, or it could be secondary to the altered production of other hormones such as the luteinizing hormone or follicle-stimulating hormone. Your physician will discuss the results with you, try to identify the reason for the low levels, and prescribe any necessary medications.

In the first article in this series, we described the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. This week, we discuss how your diet can affect your Hormone and Diet levels and reduce the symptoms of aging-related diseases.

The Effects of Dysregulated Hormone Levels and How to Fix Them

Several Hormone and Diet are important for maintaining a healthy metabolism and immune system, and allowing levels to fall too low or climb too high has a series of negative consequences. However, there are many natural ways to alter hormone levels without resorting to pharmaceuticals.

The problem: Estrogen is critical for female fertility and reproduction. When levels fall too low, it results in symptoms such as low libido, and altered menstrual cycle, mood swings, and depression.

The dietary solution: Although estrogen cannot be obtained from the diet, phytoestrogens are a family of compounds found in a number of foods. They exhibit weak estrogen-like effects. Good sources of phytoestrogens are soy and flaxseed. For example, the isoflavones (a type of phytoestrogen) in soy were reported to reduce the symptoms and improve the health and quality of life of postmenopausal women [1]. Of course, too much soy can lead to unwanted estrogen-like effects so it is important to consume in moderation.

The dietary solution: A number of dietary supplements have been linked to increased testosterone levels. For example, low vitamin D levels are associated with hypogonadism, and increasing vitamin D levels could increase testosterone levels [2]. Vitamin D-rich foods include fatty fish such as tuna and salmon, egg yolks, beef liver, and vitamin D-fortified foods including milk and cereals.

The problem: Insulin is a critical metabolic hormone that regulates fat, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism and promotes the absorption of glucose from the circulation into muscle, fat, and the liver. Insulin levels that are too high lead to hyperinsulinemia, which is the cause of a number of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Conversely, hypoinsulinemia, or low insulin levels, can lead to weight gain, poor concentration, fatigue, and a lack of motivation.

The dietary solution: The best way to prevent insulin-related symptoms is to reduce your risk of insulin resistance. This includes not consuming excess calories and selecting complex carbohydrates. For example, avoid refined products such as white bread and pasta, and instead select whole grain breads, beans, bran, lentils, vegetables, and oats.

The problem: Cortisol is a stress Hormone secreted by the adrenal glands; it plays a key role in the fight or flight response. Although this is a critical Hormone and Diet, excess circulating levels can lead to increased stress, hypertension, and obesity. This can be particularly problematic in peri- and postmenopausal women, who are already more susceptible to obesity.

The dietary solution: Alcohol and caffeine can both increase cortisol secretion. Therefore, these products should be avoided if you are under chronic stress or if you are peri- or postmenopausal. In addition, studies suggested that the weight loss caused by following either Nordic nutrition recommendations or an paleo diet reduced cortisol levels [3].

Eat the Right Type of Food

There are many other ways that eating certain foods can be beneficial or have negative effects on the levels of specific Hormone and Diet. However, one of the main concerns with the modern-day food-chain is the high levels of hormones in many items we consume. Although meat can provide valuable nutrients, it is important to remember that not all meat is created equal! Many animals consumed in the United States are not fed a natural diet: they receive antibiotics and hormone-based diets, which could have the knock-on effect of altering hormone levels in anyone consuming the resulting meat. Therefore, it is always best to reduce meat intake and select organic, grass-fed meat and meat products whenever possible.

The Benefits Of Raw Cacao

Today’s media is full of reports about so-called “superfoods.” While most of these reports are based on some level of fact, misrepresentation or poor interpretation of medical and scientific findings often leads to misinformation and sensational yet misleading headlines. A prime example of this is raw cacao. The health benefits of raw cacao are astounding; however, this, unfortunately, does not necessarily mean that eating a bar of milk chocolate each day will have the same effects. Read on to learn more about the ways in which raw cacao can improve your health and how to take full advantage.

What is Raw Cacao?

When purchasing raw cacao products such as powder, it is important to understand the differences between raw cacao powder and the more common cocoa powder. Raw cacao powder is very pure. It is made from raw, unroasted cocoa beans via a process known as cold pressing, which removes the fat in the form of cacao butter; much of the bean and nutrients remain intact.

Cacao is one of the best sources of flavonoids (which are potent antioxidants) available, which means that it has huge health benefits. It is also rich in protein, cholesterol-free and monounsaturated fats, fiber, natural carbohydrates, and minerals (including zinc, iron, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, and calcium).

Cocoa powder is produced in a similar way to cacao powder, except that it undergoes high-temperature processing during production. Although it retains significant health benefits, the high temperatures used to destroy some of the nutritional value. As cocoa undergoes further processing to make reduced-strength dark chocolate and milk chocolate, increasing amounts of the nutrients are removed. Therefore, raw cacao powder, cocoa powder, or very strong dark chocolate are recommended for optimal health benefits.

Cardiovascular benefits

Many people are at an increased risk of cardiovascular events as they age. The good news is that the consumption of certain foods can help reduce this risk. Cocoa-based products can have significant beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system by reducing cardiovascular risk and atherosclerosis, improving circulation, lowering the levels of LDL (bad) and increasing the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure. Many of these effects are caused by the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the flavonoids.

  • Cacao- and cocoa-based products can reduce hypertension. For example, the Cocoa, Cognition, and Aging (CoCoA) Study was performed in 90 elderly individuals who received cocoa-based drinks with high, medium, or low flavonoid content. Blood pressure was reduced significantly in patients that received high- or medium-content cocoa compared with those that received low flavonoid cocoa [1]. The subjects also exhibited improved insulin resistance and reduced lipid peroxidation.
  • Cardiovascular function. A recent study assessed vascular stiffness in healthy younger (<35) and older (50–80) men who drank cocoa or a control drink twice a day for two weeks. The subjects who drank cocoa exhibited significantly improved cardiovascular function, as measured by improved endothelial function, blood pressure, and vascular stiffness [2]. A second similar study confirmed these effects and also indicated that the consumption of high-flavonoid chocolate improved platelet aggregation (an indicator of the ability of the blood to form clots) compared with low flavonoid chocolate [3].
  • Cholesterol. Several studies have investigated the ability of cocoa and cacao to improve cholesterol. For example, consuming 400 g cocoa powder with 500 ml skimmed milk per day increased HDL and lowered LDL cholesterol levels in elderly subjects at high risk of cardiovascular disease [4]. Similar observations were made in young healthy and hypercholesterolemic subjects [5] and in elderly healthy individuals [6].

Cognitive function

The available data suggest that cocoa and cacao could help protect against cognitive decline in aging individuals.

  • In the same CoCoA study described above, subjects that received cocoa with a high or medium flavonoid content had significant improvements in two different measures of cognitive function: a trail making test and a verbal fluency test. The improvements were greatest in the high flavonoid vs. the intermediate flavonoid group. However, there were no improvements in the mini-mental state evaluation among groups [1].
  • Cocoa and cacao might also protect against dementia and related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease [7].

Metabolic Effects

The risk of metabolic diseases often increases as we age, and conditions such as diabetes and obesity are associated with reduced mortality. Luckily, cocoa could help reduce the risk of these conditions and their symptoms. Possibly the most important metabolic effect of cocoa is its ability to improve insulin sensitivity. In one study, subjects received dark or white chocolate (with high and zero flavonoid content, respectively), and insulin sensitivity was assessed using glucose tolerance tests and the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index. Dark, but not white, chocolate significantly improved both measures of insulin sensitivity and reduced blood pressure [8].

Hormonal Changes

The symptoms of many aging-related diseases have been linked to reduced hormone levels over time. Therefore, improving natural hormone production can reduce the symptoms of many aging-related diseases. Cocoa can have beneficial effects on the production of several hormones.

  • Testosterone Injections. Cocoa and cacao contain high concentrations of zinc, which has been shown to increase testosterone production [9].
  • Stress hormones. We all know that nice, relaxed feeling that occurs when we eat a delicious, rich piece of dark chocolate. It turns out that there is a physiological reason for this! Cocoa can potently inhibit the release of the stress hormone cortisol. Healthy men aged 20–50 who consumed a single piece of dark chocolate had a significantly reduced response to a psychosocial stressor. These effects were caused by inhibiting the release of the stress hormones cortisol and epinephrine from the adrenal gland [10].

So, there you have it! Cocoa really is a super-food. It is not only delicious but, when eaten in unprocessed forms, it has significant health benefits.

Turmeric and The Health Benefits

Turmeric, Several plants, and their extracts have been reported to have health benefits, and it can be difficult to know what is true. Are all these things as good as they seem? For turmeric, the answer is a resounding yes!

Turmeric is an herbal plant grown in Asia. The roots are used to make the yellow spice turmeric, which is most commonly used in Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Iranian cooking. It is the main spice in curries and is also used to color cheese and butter.

Although the health benefits of turmeric have been known for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, it has only recently been appreciated in Western medicine. Curcumin is a phenolic curcuminoid that is thought to be responsible for many of the health benefits of turmeric. It has potent and well-characterized antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Read on to learn more about the other ways in which this amazing spice can boost your health.

Anticancer effects

Cancer development is a highly complex process that involves DNA damage, inflammation, and the disruption of cellular signaling and death pathways. Although the data are preliminary, there is a certain amount of excitement in the oncology community because curcumin can affect several of these pathways to exert anticancer effects.

Specific clinical trials in patients with cancer are ongoing, but the available results suggest that curcumin could be an effective treatment for multiple cancers, including multiple myeloma, head, and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and pancreatic, prostate, breast, colorectal, lung, and oral cancers [1].

 

Cognitive function

An exciting recent discovery is that turmeric could improve cognitive function in elderly individuals. An Australian study published in April 2016 administered placebo control or a form of curcumin to 96 community-dwelling older adults for 1 year. Various cognitive functions were tested before treatment and at 6- and 12-months. Subjects that received placebo exhibited a cognitive decline at 6 months, whereas those that received curcumin did not [2].

Although the Australian study was not definitive, the available data suggest that curcumin could have several anti-Alzheimer’s disease effects such as preventing the production and aggregation of β-amyloid in the brain and also regenerating brain cells [3]. Taken together, these data suggest that the regular intake of turmeric might reduce the aging-associated decline in cognitive function.

Increase testosterone levels

As anyone reading this blog understands, declining testosterone levels during normal aging are associated with several negative effects on health. Recent research has suggested that turmeric might increase testosterone levels in different ways. First, it can help reverse a number of conditions that can contribute to reduced low testosterone production, such as high cholesterol and dysregulated blood sugar.

The anti-oxidative effects of turmeric can also prevent oxidative damage to Leydig cells in the testis, which could, in turn, normalize with testosterone injections. In mice, turmeric could improve fertility by protecting the testes from various stressors [4, 5].

Metabolic diseases

Curcumin exhibits a seemingly endless number of beneficial metabolic effects. For example:

  • It can increase the levels of HDL or good cholesterol and lower the levels of LDL or bad cholesterol [6]. This is important because low HDL levels and high LDL levels are risk factors for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
  • It reduces blood glucose levels and improves glucose metabolism in rodent models, suggesting that it could be an effective treatment for diabetes [7].

 

How to make the most of your turmeric intake

Now you know about just some of the health benefits of turmeric, it is important to understand how to make the most of it. As with all drugs or supplements, the actions of turmeric are limited by its bioavailability, which is defined as the amount that is biologically available to exert its physiological effects. The bioavailability of a drug declines as it is metabolized in the liver, which is a particular concern with any drug or supplement that is administered orally.

One of the best ways to increase the bioavailability of curcumin is to consume turmeric-rich foods with black pepper. Black pepper contains a substance named piperine, which is a potent inhibitor of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (one of the liver enzymes responsible for drug metabolism) [8]. Indeed, eating even a small amount of piperine with turmeric could increase the bioavailability of turmeric by around 2000% [9].

Its molecular formula is C27H40O3, and the molecular weight 412.61.

Testosterone Cypionate – Clinical Pharmacology

Endogenous androgens are responsible for normal growth and development of the male sex organs and for maintenance of secondary sex characteristics. These effects include growth and maturation of the prostate, seminal vesicles, penis, and scrotum; development of male hair distribution, such as beard, pubic, chest, and axillary hair; laryngeal enlargement, vocal cord thickening, and alterations in body musculature and fat distribution. Drugs in this class also cause retention of nitrogen, sodium, potassium, and phosphorous, and decreased urinary excretion of calcium. Androgens have been reported to increase protein anabolism and decrease protein catabolism. Nitrogen balance is improved only when there is sufficient intake of calories and protein.

Androgens are responsible for the growth spurt of adolescence and for eventual termination of linear growth, brought about by fusion of the epiphyseal growth centers. In children, exogenous androgens accelerate linear growth rates but may cause a disproportionate advancement in bone maturation. Use over long periods may result in fusion of the epiphyseal growth centers and termination of the growth process. Androgens have been reported to stimulate the production of red blood cells by enhancing production of erythropoietic stimulation factor.

During exogenous administration of androgens, endogenous testosterone release is inhibited through feedback inhibition of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH). At large doses of exogenous androgens, spermatogenesis may also be suppressed through feedback inhibition of pituitary follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).

There is a lack of substantial evidence that androgens are effective in fractures, surgery, convalescence, and functional uterine bleeding.

Pharmacokinetics

Testosterone esters are less polar than free testosterone. Testosterone esters in oil injected intramuscularly are absorbed slowly from the lipid phase; thus, Testosterone Cypionate can be given at intervals of two to four weeks.

Testosterone in plasma is 98 percent bound to a specific testosterone-estradiol binding globulin, and about 2 percent is free. Generally, the amount of this sex-hormone binding globulin in the plasma will determine the distribution of testosterone between free and bound forms, and the free testosterone concentration will determine its half-life.

About 90 percent of a dose of testosterone injections is excreted in the urine as glucuronic and sulfuric acid conjugates of testosterone and its metabolites; about 6 percent of a dose is excreted in the feces, mostly in the unconjugated form. Inactivation of testosterone occurs primarily in the liver. Testosterone therapy is metabolized to various 17-keto steroids through two different pathways.

The half-life of Testosterone Cypionate, when injected intramuscularly, is approximately eight days.

In many tissues, the activity of testosterone therapy appears to depend on reduction to dihydrotestosterone, which binds to cytosol receptor proteins. The steroid-receptor complex is transported to the nucleus where it initiates transcription events and cellular changes related to androgen action.

Indications and Usage for Testosterone Cypionate description

Testosterone Cypionate description injection is indicated for replacement therapy in the male in conditions associated with symptoms of deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone.

  • Primary hypogonadism (congenital or acquired)-testicular failure due to cryptorchidism, bilateral torsion, orchitis, vanishing testis syndrome; or orchidectomy.
  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (congenital or acquired): gonadotropin or LHRH deficiency, or pituitary-hypothalamic injury from tumors, trauma, or radiation.

Safety and efficacy of Testosterone Cypionate description in men with “age-related hypogonadism” (also referred to as “late-onset hypogonadism”) have not been established.

Contraindications

  1. Known hypersensitivity to the drug
  2. Males with carcinoma of the breast
  3. Males with known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate gland
  4. Women who are or who may become pregnant
  5. Patients with serious cardiac, hepatic or renal disease

Warnings

Hypercalcemia may occur in immobilized patients. If this occurs, the drug should be discontinued.

Prolonged use of high doses of androgens (principally the 17-α alkyl-androgens) has been associated with the development of hepatic adenomas, hepatocellular carcinoma, and peliosis hepatis —all potentially life-threatening complications.

Geriatric patients treated with androgens may be at an increased risk of developing prostatic hypertrophy and prostatic carcinoma although conclusive evidence to support this concept is lacking.

There have been postmarketing reports of venous thromboembolic events, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), in patients using testosterone products, such as Testosterone Cypionate description. Evaluate patients who report symptoms of pain, edema, warmth, and erythema in the lower extremity for DVT and those who present with acute shortness of breath for PE. If a venous thromboembolic event is suspected, discontinue treatment with Testosterone Cypionate description and initiate appropriate workup and management.

Long term clinical safety trials have not been conducted to assess the cardiovascular outcomes of testosterone replacement therapy in men. To date, epidemiologic studies and randomized controlled trials have been inconclusive for determining the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, and cardiovascular death, with the use of testosterone compared to non-use. Some studies, but not all, have reported an increased risk of MACE in association with the use of testosterone replacement therapy in men. Patients should be informed of this possible risk when deciding whether to use or to continue to use Testosterone Cypionate description.

Edema, with or without congestive heart failure, may be a serious complication in patients with preexisting cardiac, renal or hepatic disease.

Gynecomastia may develop and occasionally persists in patients being treated for hypogonadism.

The preservative benzyl alcohol has been associated with serious adverse events, including the “gasping syndrome”, and death in pediatric patients. Although normal therapeutic doses of this product ordinarily deliver amounts of benzyl alcohol that are substantially lower than those reported in association with the “gasping syndrome”, the minimum amount of benzyl alcohol at which toxicity may occur is not known. The risk of benzyl alcohol toxicity depends on the quantity administered and the hepatic capacity to detoxify the chemical. Premature and low-birth weight infants may be more likely to develop toxicity.

Androgen therapy should be used cautiously in healthy males with delayed puberty. The effect on bone maturation should be monitored by assessing the bone age of the wrist and hand every 6 months. In children, androgen treatment may accelerate bone maturation without producing a compensatory gain in linear growth. This adverse effect may result in compromised adult stature. The younger the child the greater the risk of compromising final mature height.

This drug has not been shown to be safe and effective for the enhancement of athletic performance. Because of the potential risk of serious adverse health effects, this drug should not be used for such purpose.

Precautions

General

Patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy may develop acute urethral obstruction. Priapism or excessive sexual stimulation may develop. Oligospermia may occur after prolonged administration or excessive dosage. If any of these effects appear, the androgen should be stopped and if restarted, a lower dosage should be utilized.

Testosterone Cypionate description should not be used interchangeably with testosterone propionate description because of differences in duration of action.

Testosterone Cypionate description is not for intravenous use.

Information for Patients

Patients should be instructed to report any of the following: nausea, vomiting, changes in skin color, ankle swelling, too frequent or persistent erections of the penis.

Laboratory Tests

Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels (to detect polycythemia) should be checked periodically in patients receiving long-term androgen administration.

Serum cholesterol may increase during androgen therapy.

Drug Interactions

Androgens may increase sensitivity to oral anticoagulants. The dosage of the anticoagulant may require a reduction in order to maintain satisfactory therapeutic hypoprothrombinemia.

Concurrent administration of oxyphenbutazone and androgens may result in elevated serum levels of oxyphenbutazone.

In diabetic patients, the metabolic effects of androgens may decrease blood glucose and, therefore, insulin requirements.

Drug/Laboratory Test Interferences

Androgens may decrease levels of thyroxine-binding globulin, resulting in decreased total T4 serum levels and increased resin uptake of T3 and T4. Free thyroid hormone levels remain unchanged, however, and there is no clinical evidence of thyroid dysfunction.

Carcinogenesis

Animal data

Testosterone has been tested by subcutaneous injection and implantation in mice and rats. The implant induced cervical-uterine tumors in mice, which metastasized in some cases. There is suggestive evidence that injection of testosterone into some strains of female mice increases their susceptibility to hepatoma. Testosterone is also known to increase the number of tumors and decrease the degree of differentiation of chemically induced carcinomas of the liver in rats.

Human data

There are rare reports of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients receiving long-term therapy with androgens in high doses. Withdrawal of the drugs did not lead to regression of the tumors in all cases.

Geriatric patients treated with androgens may be at an increased risk of developing prostatic hypertrophy and prostatic carcinoma although conclusive evidence to support this concept is lacking.

Pregnancy

Adverse Reactions

The following adverse reactions in the male have occurred with some androgens:

Endocrine and urogenital: Gynecomastia and excessive frequency and duration of penile erections. Oligospermia may occur at high dosages.

Skin and Appendages: Hirsutism, male pattern of baldness, seborrhea, and acne.

Cardiovascular Disorders – myocardial infarction, stroke

Fluid and electrolyte disturbances: Retention of sodium, chloride, water, potassium, calcium, and inorganic phosphates.

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, cholestatic jaundice, alterations in liver function tests, rarely hepatocellular neoplasms and peliosis hepatis (see WARNINGS).

Hematologic: Suppression of clotting factors II, V, VII, and X, bleeding in patients on concomitant anticoagulant therapy, and polycythemia.

Nervous system: Increased or decreased libido, headache, anxiety, depression, and generalized paresthesia.

Allergic: Hypersensitivity, including skin manifestations and anaphylactoid reactions.

Vascular Disorders: venous thromboembolism

Miscellaneous: Inflammation and pain at the site of intramuscular testosterone injection.
