BMI does not measure body fat directly. However, research indicates that BMI correlates to direct measures of body fat such as underwater weighing and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and is considered an inexpensive and easy-to-perform alternative for these.

Objective(s):

Nitric oxide (NO), a product of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), contributes to germ cell apoptosis. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of Aloe vera gel (AVG) on male Wistar rat reproductive organ, serum NO level, and expression of iNOS gene in Leydig cells.

Materials and Methods:

Adult male Wistar rats (n=36) is for experiments in three groups. The experimental groups were orally administered with the AVG extract solution once-daily as follow: 150 mg.kg-1; group A, 300 mg.kg-1; group B, and only standard saline; group C (control group). They are with untreated females, and the reproductive and chemical parameters assessed for each group, including semen quality, serum testosterone, sperm fertility, gonad and body weight, serum NO concentration (by the Griess method), and iNOS gene expression (using RT-PCR).

Results:

The testes weight, serum testosterone, as well as sperm count and fertility of the AVG, The treated groups reduced when compared to the control (P<0.001). The concentration of serum NO was significantly increased (37.1±4.63 µM) in the administrated group with higher AVG concentration, compared to the control group (P<0.001; 10.19±0.87 µM); however, iNOS mRNA expression was increased in the treated animals (P<0.001).

Conclusion:

iNOS may play a functional role in spermatogenesis via apoptosis, reducing sperm count, but further studies are needed to illustrate the mechanisms by which AVG exerts its adverse effects on spermatogenesis and sperm quality.

Once we hit age 30, it’s all downhill for the body’s hormone levels. The lean body mass (LBM) of our organs starts to decrease, while the adipose mass, or fat mass, increases. Between the ages of 30 thru 75, the liver, kidneys, brain and pancreas atrophy by 30% on average. In men between the ages of 40 thru 80, the LBM declines about 5% per decade and in women by 2.5% per decade. Meanwhile, during this same period, the body fat in both sexes is increasing. By the late 30s, men are starting to gain fat in the abdomen. Men between the ages of 30 thru 70 don’t gain weight, but women’s mass shrinks by 30% and the fat expand by 50%. Women, as they age mainly, accumulate fat on their hips and as menopause starts, the belly rolls begin.

These changes aren’t part of the aging process, but a threat to health and longevity, according to gerontologist. First, the amount of aerobic power is directly connected to the amount of LBM. Second, this shrinkage of the vital organs means that they cannot do their jobs as well, whether it is the heart pumping, the muscles lifting, or the kidneys clearing metabolic wastes from the blood. Third, as the abdominal fat rises, so does the risk for heart attack, hypertension, and diabetes.
